Chardham Yatra 2019: Importance of Pilgrimage and Who Made these Temples

Each year on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, the holy Chardham yatra begins with the opening of the kapat of Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham. Chardham Yatra Package started on May 7 this year. After two days of opening of Yamunotri and Gangotri kapat, on May 9, Kedarnath Temple Kapat opened and Badrinath Dham Kapat opened on May 10 for all visitors. Each year, thousands of pilgrims from the country and abroad come to visit Chardham with great devotion. Kedarnath Dham of Lord Shiva is located in Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand, Badrinath of Lord Vishnu in Chamoli, Gangotri Dham of Mata Ganges on Uttarkashi and Yamunotri Dham of Mata Yamuna in Uttarkashi district.

It is said that in the 8th-9th century, Adiguru Shankaracharya discovered Badrinath. The idol of Lord Badrinath was in a cave near the elevated pond and in the sixteenth century a king of Garhwal kept him in the current temple. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. In the 1950s there was greater movement in terms of religious tourism.

As mentioned in Skanda Purana, Garhwal was used to recognize as Kedarkhand in past, where we can find the explanation of Kedarnath Dham. Kedarnath is mentioned in the Hindus epic sculpture Mahabharata also. It is said that after the end of Mahabharata war, Pandavas came here to worship Lord Shiva for salvation and wash away the sin of killing own tribe brothers. It is believed that the Kedarnath temple was built by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The description of the Badrinath temple is found in Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana which was also discovered by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

The Nepalese Gorkha Fighters ruled Kumaon-Garhwal from 1790 to 1815. And it is believed that the Gangotri Temple was built at the same time by the General of Gorkha, Amar Singh Thapa. The true temple of Yamunotri was built in the 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur. Although it is also said that Yamunotri was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri.

Religiously, the Chardham yatra has immense significance. The followers of Hinduism go to the temples of Uttarakhand and visit them in search of sacred places of pilgrimage. This trip is available only in summer. In the winter the Kapat of all the Dhams is closed. It is said that char dham provide liberation. There is such a belief that the Chardham Yatra can obtain salvation.
